Prof. Tony F Chan

Prof. Tony F Chan assumed the presidency of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on 1 September 2009. Prof. Chan received his PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University. He taught at Yale University, and later at UCLA (where he became Dean of Physical Sciences) and was the Assistant Director of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Directorate at the US National Science Foundation.

Prof. Chan is an elected member of the US National Academy of Engineering, an elected Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and an elected fellow of both the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was one of the world’s most cited mathematicians.

Prof. Chan is currently a member of the United States Committee of 100. He is also a Founding Member and Board Director of the Academy of Sciences of Hong Kong, the former President of the Hong Kong Institution of Science, a fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences, and a member of the Committee on Innovation, Technology and Re-industralisation (CITR) of the Hong Kong SAR Government.

Prof. Chan will join the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia on 1 September 2018 as its third president.
